Tom Burrell

Advertising visionary Tom Burrell examines this myth with an expert eye in this provocative and powerful tome. Burrell tells how this stereotype has been successfully marketed over the years.

He not only talks about the issue, but also challenges blacks by asking why so many still think and act as if they are enslaved.

Ultimately, he wants blacks to take action against media distortions and programmed self-hatred.

Melvin Delgado

Latinos own 2 million small businesses and counting. Author Melvin Delgado delivers various case studies to show the link between indigenous small businesses and community well being in this exploding population. The number of Latino business owners is expected to double within the next few years.

Small businesses help communities more than most imagine and Latino businesses not only strengthen the economy, but also offer outlets to those that society tends to overlook. For example, Delgado points out how these companies often provide jobs for potential employees whose criminal and mental health backgrounds would not be considered by mainstream businesses.

Format: Paperback, 296 pages, hardcover, Kindle (Columbia University Press)

Gerald M. Boyd

In the world of journalism, journalist Gerald Boyd made the news—literally and figuratively. When he was appointed as managing editor of the New York Times in 2001, he became the first African-American to hold one of the paper’s top two editing positions. And his leadership helped, the revered paper won numerous Pulitzers.

But, it all came to a halt when, in 2003, a young African American reporter named Jayson Blair was caught plagiarizing and fabricating stories. Boyd, who died in 2006, was forced to resign.

In this posthumous memoir, Boyd discusses how he overcame poverty, racism, and personal problems to become a powerful newsman. He also gives an inside peek at the power plays that went on at the Times, and the racial obstacles he faced while he was on staff.

Format: Hardcover, 432 pages, Kindle (Lawrence Hill Books)
